MARIPOSA DORADA explores interplays between power and fragility, beauty and ferocity. Cuba’s national flower, the Flor de Mariposa, represents these contrasting concepts. During colonial times, citizens repurposed the delicate petals to hide independence messages. Thus transforming an elegant flower into a tool for revolution. MARIPOSA DORADA draws inspiration from this shift in meaning. The work is meant to be observed from different angles and rests on a series of tubes. Because of this, the light is eternally in motion.
Descripción: los 13 La Habana Bienal, the most significant visual arts event in Cuba, transforms the island’s capital city and creates a “cultural corridor” at the same time. Because of this, creators and the public interact. Therefore working with the Detrás del Muro organización, Grimanesa Amorós ha creado MARIPOSA DORADA, una monumental instalación escultórica de luz para la XIII Bienal de La Habana.
