El Museo de las Artes del Bronx | Blanco Calle 80

ARGENTUM draws inspiration from the renovated Landmark Building on 80 White St.

The industrialism of lower Manhattan influenced steel as the material choice of the piece. Throughout New York’s history, Manhattan was the hub of industry. Due to this boom in city wealth, I began to think about the building blocks of the city.

80 White Street has become home to the Bronx Museum’s Artist in Marketplace (AIM) Program, which can be found on the second floor of the building. Although AIM’s original headquarters was in the Bronx, it has relocated to Manhattan. This program aims to connect artists to the art world, much like how steel supports an entire building.

ARGENTUM se compone de dos secciones principales. El lado izquierdo se basa en la isla de Manhattan, mientras que el derecho representa el Bronx. Nueva York comenzó en el bajo Manhattan y se expandió hasta el Bronx. Estos dos distritos representan los límites de la ciudad y el desarrollo del futuro.

La relación entre los cimientos de acero de 80 White Street y el nuevo futuro de AIM en Manhattan me inspiró a combinar dos partes vitales del edificio; su fundación y residentes. Decidí usar acero inoxidable, pero no el reflectante convencional. El acero inoxidable que se está utilizando se refleja, pero no tanto como para que el espectador pueda ver su reflejo perfecto. La imagen que se ve está borrosa y ligeramente sesgada, por lo que parece casi plateada, de ahí el nombre ARGENTUM. Como la pieza ocupa la mayor parte de la entrada, el espectador interactúa constantemente con ella. Al entrar y salir del edificio, el observador se ve a sí mismo, pero al igual que la velocidad de la luz, nunca se puede capturar por completo y solo se aprecia en movimiento.
