Living in Lima, Amorós would travel throughout Peru whenever she could. Amorós’ exposure to the historical sites of the country led her to research the Incan Empire. The Incas’ use of gold and religious beliefs contributed considerably to their way of life. They would make masks of deities forged from pure gold as a form of worship. The population living on the Uros Islands are descendants from the Quecha and Aymara, Puno being the only place in Peru where both indigenous groups are living unanimously. Walking on the totora reeds of the Uros Islands – the material the islands are constructed from – Amorós was struck by the sense of weightlessness and spiritual connectivity achieved on these floating islands. Golden Uros explores the duality of ancient beliefs and universal spirituality by incorporating the imagery of Amorós’ golden self-portrait as a deity.
