Together, Grimanesa and Mark will explore how artists’ vision can grow and how collaborations, resources, and business thinking can make that possible.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(0:28) Light, it really is, it impacts how we see, how we feel, how we live. Grimanesa uses light as her material and her language. She really kind of creates, you know, holds an aura around the light.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(0:43) First, I want to say thank you, Aza, for organizing these wonderful conversations and, of course, to you, Mark, for your kind introduction.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(0:51) What is so special about light that draws you to create art and experiences with it?\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(0:56) I had encountered Northern Lights. I couldn’t stop saying, wow, if I could only share this with others, wouldn’t it be amazing? That’s when I started, you know, working with light. When creating my lighting sequences, I feel very much like a conductor when they do a composition where every note has a space.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(1:16) Did you have to draw all that out first, or were you placing some of that on site?\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(1:20) When you are on the space outdoors, it’s, for me, it’s like drawing a three-dimensional. It’s 360. I have to be very careful and precise as to how every line is going to be going up because it takes about six hours, perhaps, per month.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(1:38) I’ve seen what you did here in this house on Shelter Island, and I’ve seen some of your other smaller pieces, and it’s interesting because it affects a family and friends of the collectors and the owners as much as it affects a community, that your smaller pieces really do the same job on a smaller scale.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(1:53) The conductor wants truly your essence as an artist. So I think the process goes both ways. They inspire me as much as, perhaps, their learning of methods that I do my work. He gave me the challenge to see if I was going to be able to do such a small little piece, which has been such an endeavor, let me tell you.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(2:13) This is just a small part of a large installation that are multiples of these pieces around that are found at these works of art.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(2:21) She even draws and paints out the light changes color and sequences to different moods and different, you know, animation.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(2:30) And if you plan to do another piece in the future that combines music and lights and kind of the experience of the audience.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(2:38) I learned quite a lot by working with an amazing team at the LA Philharmonic.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(2:45) Sometimes when they ask me, “what was your dream project, Grimanesa?” and I always say that I want to make an opera. Because there are so many challenges that are out of my pure direct control.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(2:59) Do you have any favorite communities where you engage with a local culture, creative DNA, and it really worked? So maybe it’s a place and particular people you work with.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(3:09) I do not have a favorite one because I think that each one, I know that I have left my 100%. I think that the world is just beautiful everywhere. Every continent is amazing.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>(3:24) I love my LPP, which is my love, passion, and perseverance that I’ve had throughout my life.
