(Workshop) Papermaking Outreach Program

Responsive Hands

Grimanesa Amoros participated and collaborated in a papermaking program sponsored by Dieu Donne Papermill. The necessary equipment for papermaking was provided, including 100% cotton and linen rag paper pulp, student size paper moulds, portable vats, pigmented fiber for painting, various collage elements, clean-up sponges, and buckets. Papermaking is a natural educational tool, intriguing children as they see how a vat full of water and pulp becomes a sheet of paper. The medium encourages children to express themselves creatively and gives hands-on experience in one of the most basic forms of recycling. As part of this program, Ms. Amoros and Mina Takahashi (Executive Director, Dieu Donne Papermill) led a papermaking workshop at the Museo del Barrio where they guided children ages 6 and up through the process of papermaking. Topics included self-portrait through collage, pulp painting, recycling, pulp casting and making sheets in different shapes. Year: 1993 photos by Grimanesa Amorós Studio
