ARTIST STATEMENT (English)

AEVUM is Latin, originally meaning “age,” “aeon,” or “everlasting time.” Grimanesa Amoros Light sculpture draws inspiration from the connections within the commissioners’ familial tapestry. AEVUM evokes the essence of the family, transcending its literal meaning to become a symbol of enduring bonds and shared experiences.

Rooted in Amoros’s rich cultural heritage of Peru, the sculpture takes shape as a poetic fusion of an hourglass, representing the passage of time with loved ones, and a central spiral etched into its core—a powerful homage to the journey towards enlightenment within Incan culture. This fusion of forms pays tribute to the artist’s roots and serves as a visual metaphor for the continuous evolution and transformation of familial relationships.

AEVUM‘s lighting sequence explores the ebb and flow of human connections. Each moment illuminates the nuanced interplay of relationships, echoing the profound navigation undertaken by parents across generations. Through the harmonious convergence of form and light, Amoros invites viewers to contemplate the ever-shifting dynamics within the familial unit—a timeless and universal journey captured in the glow of AEVUM.
