Tongji University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities. It was founded in 1907 by the German government and German physicians in Shanghai. It has renowned engineering, business, and architecture programs. As a comprehensive university of which design education began in the 1940s, it was deeply influenced by the German “Bauhaus” school. Architectural education forms an “absorbing and inclusive” learning style. The Department of Art and Design department began enrolling undergraduate students in 1986.
