NY Arts Magazine – Molding the Maternal
You Cannot Feel it… I Wish You Could was on show at The Hardcore Art Contemporary Space, Miami, in July.
“In a world where the roles of male and female are consistently evolving, the artist addresses the physical lines between genders by creating a new human form that implicates both the male and the female.”
Hardcore Art Contemporary Space in Miami presented the work of Grimanesa Amorós in the exhibition You Cannot Feel it…I Wish You Could. This multimedia exhibition was a combination of sculpture, lighting and music composed by nine-time Grammy nominated musician, Meshell Ndegeocello.
Eleven handmade paper sculptures cast from the artist’s pregnant body explore the interplay between human biology and society. Central to this work is the image/concept of male pregnancy. Amorós creates a provocative body of work that challenges conventional perceptions of human biology. In a world where the roles of male and female are consistently evolving, the artist addresses the physical lines between genders by creating a new human form that implicates both the male and the female.
Originally from Lima, Amorós is an interdisciplinary artist whose diverse interests include social history, scientific research, and critical theory, all of which greatly influence her work. She often makes use of sculpture, video, lighting, and sound to create works that illuminate our notions of personal identity and community. Amorós utilizes her art for the purpose of empowerment and unity, as she involves viewers from all different backgrounds and communities.
