SPARKLING AURORA

2008

Aurora is a light sculpture created by Grimanesa Amorós, which was inspired by her Peruvian background and Peru’s natural wonders. It was created as a special project for Pinta NY 08 Air Fair. Pinta is New York’s modern and contemporary Latin American Art Fair, which was held on November 13 – 16 at both the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 West 18th Street and the B. Altman Building, 135 West 18th St.

ARTIST STATEMENT (English / Espanol)

Aurora is a series of Mixed Media Light Sculptures. I found its original inspiration from the natural phenomenon of what is known as the Northern Lights.

Light is one of my primary materials because it creates presence without physicality. In many occasions, it can be easily taken for granted, since much of what humans perceive comes from light, yet even that which is apparent can be mysterious. I’m always looking for the instance when light, in its changing forms, makes us contemplate and experience an ordinary circumstance in a different way.
