8′ × 3’8″ × 16″ (2.15 m × 1.13 m × 0.4 m)

AEVUM, originally meaning “age,” “aeon,” or “everlasting time” in Latin, is a light sculpture by Grimanesa Amoros drawing inspiration the concept of familial tapestry. AEVUM evokes the essence of the family, transcending its denotation to become a symbol of enduring bonds and shared experiences.

Amoros cleverly created this sculpture to take shape as her interpretation of an hourglass. The sculpture’s shape is an homage to the passage of time with loved ones. It is horizontal to make a pause in time, stopping the moment and enabling, metaphorically, for the family to have more “time.”

AEVUM‘s lighting sequence explores the ebb and flow of human connections. Each moment illustrates the nuanced interplay of relationships, echoing the profound navigation undertaken by parents across generations. With AEVUM, Amoros invites viewers to contemplate the ever-shifting dynamics within the familial unit, a timeless and universal journey.

Made of stainless steel, diffusion and reflective material, and LEDs, this horizontally oriented hourglass light sculpture deliberately suspends the passage of time as a luminous tribute to family bonds and the shared experiences that accumulate across generations.
