Gallery Scale

Grimanesa Amorós creates gallery-scale light sculptures: intimate, collectible LED artworks made for galleries, museum exhibitions, art fairs, and private collections. Scaled to a room rather than a building, these works invite close looking, where the curve of hand-formed tubing, the reflected glow on the wall behind it, and the pace of each lighting sequence all become part of the sculpture. The light artist — one of the pioneering women in light art — has worked with light as material and language since 2002, and her gallery-scale sculptures carry the same vocabulary as her monumental commissions, compressed into objects that can be lived with. Each piece combines LED illumination, custom structures, and layered translucent surfaces, often developed in series so a single motif can be explored across variations in color, finish, and form. Forms drawn from nature, Peruvian cultural heritage, textiles, water, and the human figure recur throughout, abstracted into shapes that appear to float and breathe within their surroundings. Because these artworks are conceived for interiors, placement matters as much as silhouette: the sculptures are positioned in conversation with the architecture around them, altering the character of a room as the light cycles. Collectors, galleries, and museums acquire at this scale, and individual works frequently travel between exhibitions, private collections, and institutional presentations over the course of their lives. Through gallery-scale light sculpture Amorós explores identity, transformation, memory, and connectivity at a human register, offering the immersive quality of her large installations in a form suited to domestic and gallery settings. These works demonstrate that light, handled as a sculptural medium, is as persuasive across a few meters of a gallery as it is across the façade of a building. Each sculpture is documented individually, with installation views and, where available, materials and dimensions, so collectors and curators can assess a work at the scale it was made for.
