Grimanesa Amorós: A Journey in Civita di Bagnoregio

Grimanesa Amorós has called New York City her creative home. However, she embraced a unique fellowship to challenge herself and create art in a new environment. An avid admirer of history and architecture, Amorós chose Civita di Bagnoregio as the perfect setting for a two-month exploration of her artistic practice and personal growth.

While in Civita, Amorós immersed herself in the region’s rich Etruscan history, forming a deep connection with the town’s culture and surroundings. Though the beauty of Civita is often captured in photographs, Amorós found that it was only by climbing to the top of the ancient town that one could truly experience its profound soul.

Central to her project was a video inspired by the Etruscan word Methlum, which means metal in latin. This piece invites viewers on a journey through Civita’s timeless landscapes, exploring the mysteries of nature—familiar yet endlessly intriguing. Amorós seamlessly merged Civita’s historical depth with her contemporary artistic vision through this work, creating a narrative that bridges past and present.

This fellowship allowed Grimanesa Amorós to connect deeply with Civita di Bagnoregio’s essence, translating its beauty and spirit into her light-based artistic practice.

Discover the soul of Civita di Bagnoregio through Grimanesa Amorós’ lens.
