Jing Daily – 精日专访:秘鲁装置艺术家阿莫罗斯的中国行

格里玛尼萨•阿莫罗斯 (Grimanesa Amoros) 是一位美貌 与才华兼备的前卫艺术家,拥有 广泛的兴趣并热爱旅游,从小在 家乡秘鲁即展示过人的艺术天分 与热情。她曾获得世界文化遗产 基金会(World Monuments Fund)的青睐,并入选美国国务 院在土耳其(2001年)和秘鲁 利马(2003年)的大使馆艺术 计划,更参与过上海艺博会。

阿莫罗斯的作品在国际上颇具好评。这个月她将在中国展开艺术之旅、精日传媒很荣幸能 在她百忙之中与其做简短访谈,了解她的背景故事及对这趟中国行的期待。

精日传媒:非常感谢你接受我们的访问,你是什么时候开始梦想成为艺术家的?为什么?

Grimanesa Amoros (GA):我住在纽约,但在秘鲁的首都利马长大,秘鲁的经验成为我 艺术概念上很基础的一个部分,同时我也去世界各地装置我的作品,在博物馆、艺廊或是公共 空间,这些旅游经验都给我很多的创作灵感。

自然的风景和光线的变化,是我在创造灯光装置所会考虑的两个重要因素。我用我的艺术 和观者分享我在秘鲁的经验,或是任何吸引我注意的事物;我的艺术不只局限于秘鲁或是美 国,而是世界性的。当观者看着任何一件我的灯光装置时,我希望他们想到与看到的是属於自己 的世界。

精日传媒:在秘鲁首都利马 长大,妳的家乡利马对你的艺术 有哪些影响?

GA:我童年的家位于秘鲁 的海边,这使我对大海的美有种 深深的迷恋:从潮汐的颜色到海 浪所激起的泡沫与浪花、总是非 常吸引我。

秘鲁的外海是著名的普诺, 乌罗什群岛。乌罗什群岛是由在 迪迪喀喀湖生长的托托拉芦苇所 建造的漂浮之岛,岛上的一切不管是房子,船与了望塔都是用这种芦苇搭建出来的。

我创造“Uros House”最基本的概念,就是来自海浪的泡沫与芦苇。每一个球体都是海浪的 泡沫,覆盖在上面的纹路是岸边的芦苇,这件雕塑体现出海浪的美,并用传统的技术装置而 成。“Uros House”从地面升起,就好像它也是大地的一部分。

精日传媒:你的家乡对你的创作似乎影响颇多,那你1984年搬到纽约学习艺术后,纽约 的生活有没有对你的作品产生改变?

GA:纽约对我的创作确实起到一些转变的作用。我记得我初到纽约,走在纽约街头的时 候,我就告诉自己:“这是我的城市。”当年纽约街头充斥着色情电影,皮条客、美金才25分的 贩卖机等等,但走在42街感受到的那种源源不绝的精力与活力很吸引我。一切仿佛如电影场景 般,不同文化的语言,食物与风俗在这里和谐地融合在一起,给我很大的震撼。

纽约给我的影响是很深远的,我在一个保守的环境成长,之后又来到这个开放豁达的城 市,这个经验促使我思考“新的体验”的重要性。我想把它传达给其他人,让人们有新的想法, 试试不同方式的生活并尝试去体验不同的事物。

精日传媒:所以你的作品是 反映你的生活体验,我们注意到 你的灯光作品是温暖阳光的,然 而去年在北京展出的影像系列却 比较探讨社会的阴暗面,有什么 因素让你的创作呈现这么大的反 差?

我在元空间的展出都是影像 的创作,所有的影像都是一个系 列,是我从2002年开始探索的 素材,当时我在编辑影像的时 候,基本上都不睡觉。

我想在影像作品中表达一些跟我的灯光装置作品不同的东西,我认为我们生在一个对立的世界、既有大量的财富,但也有平穷困苦的第三世界,我希望在这些影片描绘较为黑暗,复杂的那一面。

精日传媒:那次于北京的展出看起来相当成功,你这个月又再次受邀前往北京与香港是 吗?

GA:是的,我很感谢中国的朋友对我的作品的支持,去年我两次造访北京。今年原本计画前往北京为“艺术北京“做展示,然而因为我月底将会为香港巴塞尔艺术展的Harper’s BAZAAR艺术之夜与北京的中央美术学院创作展示,在时间的压力下,我可能得重新评估参与“艺术北京“的可能性。我很期待再次造访北京,我的北京朋友总会带我去一些特别有趣的地方,我还去过寺庙烧香呢!

精日传媒:为Haprper’s Bazaar于香港巴塞尔艺术展的活动创作展示,肯定是很特别的设计,能否透露一下这次的展示?

GA:是的,这是我们第一次合作,我非常兴奋!对活动现场的设计,我想先暂时保留这个期待,不过绝对可以保证会是个让人惊喜的“wow!!”这次作品的名字是“Conexion Dorada /Golden Connection”,也希望精日传媒的读者到时能来观赏体验。

精日传媒:非常感谢你的热心邀请,最後能否聊一下妳的未来计画?

GA:我会继续用装置艺术的方式,探索与反思我所体验到的外在世界并与大家分享。另外我也有不少演讲邀请,演讲总能让我分享我所拥有的经验,并近距离与热爱艺术的朋友互动。此外,下半年我接受了很多海外活动展出的邀请,除了造访香港与北京,还会前往马德里、墨西哥、上海、巴西、乔治亚等等,我很期待能在这些旅游展出中获得不同体验,并再度将这些体验传达给喜欢我的作品的朋友。

Grimanesa Amoros is a stunning and talented avant-garde artist with wide-ranging interests and a passion for travel. From a young age in her hometown of Peru, she exhibited exceptional artistic talent and enthusiasm. She has been recognized by the World Monuments Fund and was selected for the U.S. State Department’s Art in Embassies Program in Turkey (2001) and Lima, Peru (2003), and has also participated in the Shanghai Art Fair.

Amoros’s work has received international acclaim. This month, she embarks on an art tour in China. Jing Daily is honored to have a brief interview with her amid her busy schedule to learn about her background and her expectations for this trip.

Jing Daily: Thank you very much for accepting our interview. When did you first dream of becoming an artist, and why?

Grimanesa Amoros (GA): I live in New York, but I grew up in Lima, the capital of Peru. My experiences in Peru are a fundamental part of my artistic concepts. I also travel around the world to install my works in museums, galleries, and public spaces. These travel experiences have been a rich source of inspiration.

The natural landscape and changes in light are two important factors I consider when creating my light installations. Through my art, I share my experiences in Peru—or anything that captures my attention—with the audience. My art is not limited to Peru or the U.S., but is global. When people look at any of my light installations, I hope what they see and feel belongs to their own world.

Jing Daily: Growing up in Lima, how has your hometown influenced your art?

GA: My childhood home was by the sea in Peru, which gave me a deep fascination with the ocean’s beauty—from the colors of the tides to the foam and spray of the waves, which always captivated me.

Off the coast of Peru are the famous Uros Islands of Puno. The Uros are floating islands made from totora reeds that grow in Lake Titicaca. Everything on the islands—from houses to boats and watchtowers—is built from these reeds.

The basic concept of my piece Uros House comes from the foam of the waves and the reeds. Each sphere represents sea foam, and the textures on the surface represent the reeds from the shore. This sculpture reflects the beauty of the sea, created using traditional techniques. Uros House rises from the ground as if it is part of the earth.

Jing Daily: Your hometown clearly influences your work deeply. After you moved to New York in 1984 to study art, did life in New York affect your creations?

GA: Yes, New York definitely had an impact on my creative process. I remember when I first arrived and walked the streets of New York, I said to myself, “This is my city.” Back then, 42nd Street was filled with adult theaters, pimps, and vending machines where you could get things for 25 cents. But the energy and vibrancy I felt on the street were incredibly appealing. It was like walking through a movie scene—different languages, foods, and customs all coexisting in harmony. It was a huge cultural shock.

Coming from a conservative background and then living in such an open and diverse city made me reflect on the importance of “new experiences.” I want to pass that on to others—to encourage new ideas, new ways of living, and trying new things.

Jing Daily: So your work reflects your life experiences. We noticed that your light installations are warm and sunny, but the video series you exhibited in Beijing last year explored darker social themes. What caused such a contrast in your work?

GA: The exhibition at Yuan Space featured video works, all part of a series I began exploring in 2002. Back then, while editing video, I would often go without sleep.

Through these video works, I wanted to express something different from my light installations. I believe we live in a world of contrasts—there’s immense wealth, but also poverty and hardship in the third world. I wanted these films to depict the darker, more complex side of reality.

Jing Daily: That exhibition in Beijing seemed quite successful. Are you returning to Beijing and Hong Kong this month?

GA: Yes, I’m very grateful for the support my Chinese friends have shown for my work. I visited Beijing twice last year. This year, I originally planned to exhibit at Art Beijing, but due to my upcoming installations for Harper’s BAZAAR Art Night at Art Basel Hong Kong and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, I may need to reconsider my participation in Art Beijing due to time constraints. I’m really looking forward to visiting Beijing again—my friends there always take me to fascinating places. I’ve even visited temples and burned incense!

Jing Daily: Creating for Harper’s Bazaar at Art Basel Hong Kong sounds like a special project. Can you reveal anything about this new piece?

GA: Yes, this is our first collaboration, and I’m very excited! As for the design of the event, I’d like to keep some surprise for now—but I can promise it will definitely be a “wow!!” moment. The piece is called Conexion Dorada / Golden Connection. I hope Jing Daily readers will come see and experience it.

Jing Daily: Thank you for the warm invitation. Finally, could you share a bit about your future plans?

GA: I will continue using installation art to explore and reflect on the world I experience and share it with others. I’ve also received many invitations to speak, which allows me to share my experiences and engage with people who love art. In the second half of the year, I’ve accepted many international exhibition invitations. In addition to visiting Hong Kong and Beijing, I’ll also be traveling to Madrid, Mexico, Shanghai, Brazil, Georgia, and more. I’m looking forward to gaining new insights from these trips and sharing them with those who enjoy my work.
