祖国ぺルーが、NY で光のドローイングに昇華。 Homeland Peru is sublimated into a drawing of light in New York. ソーホーの南、トライベッカにスタジオを構えるグリマネサ・アモロス。ビルの入り口では、天井に設置されたライト・スカルプチャーがお出迎え。泡をつなげたようなドーム型のオブジェがやわらかな光を放っている。 4階の彼女のスタジオを埋めるのは、空間のドローイングともいうべきチューブの曲線だ。そのチューブの中を幾千もの光の粒が膨らんでは消えていく。キネティックでオーガニック。微かに色を帯びた光によって、曲線は7色の光の饗宴を生み出す。「コンピュータ制御の発光システム は、設置場所や人の動きを考慮して組 み立てます。スタジオはラボみたいなもので、ここにあるのはモックアップ。実際の作品は、高さ5ｍはあるかな」完成作は、昨年秋、メキシコ市内の彫刻ホールに恒久設置された。「チューブの材質はポリカーボネート。ガラスより丈夫で、しかも柔軟性がある。中の光は発光ダイオードだから、ほら触ってみて。冷たいまま」触ったり、中を歩いたり、鑑賞者が親しみやすいアモロスの作品は、水にも強く、野外展示に打ってつけ。建築家との共同プロジェトにも積極的だ。ペルー出身のアモロスは、1980 年代半ばにニューヨークに来た。当初、絵や写真が主だったが、いまの広いスタジオに移り、立体制作の夢が実現する。が、出産と子育てでアートから遠ざかり、2001年の9・11事件では、一時スタジオ脱出を余儀なくされた。その間、故郷を旅したことが転機となる。アンデス山中チチカカ湖に残るトトラ葦の浮き島、朝焼けから日没まで変わることのない透明な光。そんな祖国の環境に刺激された。最先端の素材や技術を追い求めながらも、「自分に最も近いもの」を表現していきたいという。ニューヨークのスタジオで生まれる光のドローイングに『ウアンチャコ』と題された作品のマケット（模型）。切れ目のないポリカーボネートのチューブは特注品。細い曲線に、チチカカ湖に群生するトトラ葦のモチーフが重なる。 South of Soho, in Tribeca Grimanesa Amoros, who holds Geo.
